If you've been following the news lately, you probably know that this year's influenza cases are higher than normal and it is rampant in the United States right now. No one wants to get the flu and you might be wondering how a crunchy person might handle it. I don't speak for all crunchies, I can only speak for myself and my family. We don't get the flu vaccine. Those that know me well, know that I am not anti-vaccine. I lean in favor of evaluating each disease/vaccine for each individual. Even in the same family, different people may need different treatment. In the case of flu vaccine, it offers limited protection (for only 3 strains, for one year, and is only about 70-85% effective) and it does still contain thimerosal.
Prevention: We use elderberry syrup. A spoonful each day. Easy. Studies even show how effective elderberries are against respiratory viruses:
Treatment: If we got the flu, how would we treat it? Well, we could use tamiflu. Lately, there have been TV advertisements for this antiviral drug. Can you say psychiatric disturbances? Any drug where vomiting is the most common side effect makes me wonder why your body wants to get rid of it! So, this crunchy will pass on that one! So........ we go back to elderberry, which has studies (above) to show its effectiveness in shortening the duration of influenza, but without side effects! For treatment, we would take a spoonful every few hours. (Note: elderberry would be contraindicated in cases of allergy to elderberries or the presence of an autoimmune disorder.)
Hopefully, this may help you make the decision that is right for your family!
