Yes, this IS a pretty crunchy thing to do! I've seen several different recipes for homemade toothpaste. This one is pretty much the same as Shoshannah's from the Bulk Herb Store.
I boiled some cloves, stevia, and cinammon in some water and strained. In a small bowl I put a bit of baking soda, Celtic sea salt, and bentonite clay; then I added the liquid until it formed a paste.
That's it! The first few times I used it, it was a little weird, but I got used to it. Will I make it again? I don't know. It depends on whether I can find another toothpaste that meets my needs. I don't want fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, or any unnatural stuff in my toothpaste! Fluoride has always been a biggie for me. When my boys were small, I refused all fluoride treatments for them at the dentist. You have to be really firm on this, because the dentists usually give you a difficult time. SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) has been implicated in causing canker sores, which I get frequently. Well, I DID get them frequently. Until several months ago when I started using a tooth powder that does not contain SLS. I've not had a canker sore since! SLS is used for the 'foaming' action you get in a toothpaste and it is a known skin irritant. There are a couple of toothpastes on the market that I am interested in trying, I'll do a product review if I decide to purchase them!
